A slow site costs you visitors before they have seen any of it. The cause is usually a handful of specific things rather than a general condition: unoptimised images, a plugin, a database query running wild, or - rarely - a server or hosting package that is simply too small.

Before changing anything, we can usually find the bottleneck fairly cheaply. Once it is clear where the seconds actually go, most of them can usually be taken back in one reasonably-sized piece of work.

We all sometimes need a second opinion to double-check a decision, an estimate, or information we've been given that just doesn't feel right.

Business E-Mail that lands in the recipient's spam folder, or never arrives at all, is one of the most pernicious problems a you can have because nothing looks wrong. The message leaves, and that is the last you hear of it.

Almost always the cause is technical and fixable: missing or incorrect SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, a shared server whose reputation somebody else ruined, or an address that has ended up on a blacklist.

A site that has disappeared is rarely gone forever. In nearly every case the files and the database still exist somewhere.

The usual causes: an expired or moved domain, a hosting account suspended, an expired certificate, or a failed update.

Moving a site to another host has many pitfalls from version incompatibilities on the new server to domain routing and DNS.

I plan the move to minimise downtime - the new site tested and running before anything is switched over - and I stay reachable while the DNS servers propagate the information about the new server across the Internet.

Old code is not automatically bad code. Plenty of PHP apps written fifteen years ago still do their job perfectly well, they just need a touch-up: removing legacy instructions, switching from now unsupported libraries to new ones, or some basic CSS upgrades for a responsive interface that works on mobile devices.
